This spirit of exploration and self-discovery is at the core of the Academy’s mission: Learning as a practice for awakening. As we ‘wake up,’ our view of life is transformed and we no longer see ourselves or our world in quite the same way. Holotropic Breathwork™ is a method that can evoke this sort of transformative experience

Stan Grof, the creator of Holotropic Breathwork™, calls it a “Technology of the Sacred.” When we do this work at the Academy, we contextualize it as experiential learning: there is something that we are each in a process of learning that lives uniquely within ourselves. The experience of the breathwork session is a way to open fully to what is within ourselves that is ready to be explored, whether it is something that needs to be known and healed, or a deep insight, or a feeling to be expressed. We place a strong emphasis on the integration process that follows the breathwork session, supporting participants to recognize what is being learned, and how the learning is happening – what capacity is growing – as well as ways to foster the ongoing learning and integration following the workshop.

Dreamwork 101: Working with Dreams for Insight and Meaning

This is an 8 week workshop meeting for two hours Wednesday evenings (Oct. 25, Nov. 1, 8, 15, (no meeting Thanksgiving week), 29, Dec. 6, 13, and 20) at Dancing Lotus Center in Helena.

Using the "if it were my dream" model developed by Jeremy Taylor, we will share our nighttime journeys and experience dreamwork with Jay and other members of a Helena dream group just finishing eleven years of weekly meetings. Each evening will include presentation on techniques and models of working with dreams followed by group dreamwork. Bringing our dream journals, we will each recall a brief aspect of a recent dream (or a long ago dream that still carries energy for us). The group will then gravitate toward working with one or two dreams in depth during the session, making sure all dreamers eventually share a dream in full. Focusing on the rich symbols and narratives of the shared dream, the group will ask clarifying questions and offer thoughts and feelings about what the dream might mean "if it were my dream." Through this process, we discover important "ahas" about the messages from our dreams, gain deep insights into our life journey, and develop a profound sense of community. Topics covered will include techniques for improving dream recall, the neuroscience of dreaming, perspectives from depth psychology (Freud, Jung, James Hillman, Clarissa Pinkola Estes), dreamwork psychodrama, lucid dreaming, and dreams as an entryway into transpersonal realms. As the series concludes, participants will receive guidance about forming their own dream groups.

Cost is $150 for the series. Register through Dancing Lotus at

This world-renowned modality offers opportunities for deep transformation, becoming more familiar with our vast inner landscape, and tapping into our intrinsic healing wisdom. On the weekend of November 10-11, Grof-certified facilitators Jay Dufrechou and Kirsten Kairos will offer a full experience of Holotropic Breathwork at Dancing Lotus Center, with an explanatory and community-forming gathering on Friday November 10 and two sessions of breathwork on Saturday November 11 (each participant will “breathe” once and “sit” once for a breathing partner).

In this gathering on October 13, Jay will provide an overview of Holotropic Breathwork, including the invitation to “feel into” some of the experiences available in breathwork. We will sample some of the music typically accompanying Holotropic Breathwork and explore some of the modes of expression common to many people during full Holotropic Breathwork sessions.

This evening will be of interest to those considering registering for the November Holotropic Breathwork experience, or simply curious about Holotropic Breathwork and/or the work of renowned psychiatrist and explorer of consciousness Stanislav Grof, one of the founders of the transpersonal psychology movement. In addition to offering a sampling of Holotropic Breathwork music and movement modalities, Jay will provide an overview of Grof’s work and answer any questions from the community. This evening will not involve a full experience of Holotropic Breathwork or movement toward deep expanded state experience.

Archetypal Astrology and Archetypal Cosmology--Mortality, Maturation, and Wisdom: The Archetypal Saturn

In the first of four foundational modules on archetypal astrology, and the first offering of The Institute of Transpersonal and Archetypal Studies in the US, we will explore the place of the planetary archetype Saturn in human life, focusing on its association with the great inevitables that we must all face, including death, time, aging, suffering, solitude, alienation, and fear. We will consider, too, the connections of Saturn to specific archetypes illuminated by Carl Jung, the Basic Perinatal Matrices described in the psychology of Stanisalv Grof, and other principles of depth psychology. We will focus especially on Saturn’s role in psychological maturation and the development of wisdom through sustained effort, discipline, and hard experience.

Using film clips, music, and text, the lecture presentation by Keiron Le Grice will draw on a range of examples from philosophy, psychology, religion, myth, and the arts to illuminate the range of expressions of Saturn and help you recognize and understand its role in your own life. Over the weekend, you will learn the fundamental techniques and principles needed to work with astrology for yourself, beginning with interpreting astrological birth charts, mediated through a close engagement with your own chart. There will also be opportunities for group discussion and informal conversation with faculty and classmates. Subsequent workshops will focus in turn on Neptune, Pluto, and Uranus. We hope you can join us!

Keiron Le Grice, ITAS director and facultyis a professor of depth psychology and chair of the Jungian and Archetypal Studies specialization at Pacifica Graduate Institute, Santa Barbara, where he teaches courses on archetypes, alchemy, individuation, synchronicity, and the history of depth psychology. He was educated at the University of Leeds, England (B.A. honors, Philosophy and Psychology) and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco (M.A., Ph.D., Philosophy and Religion). Keiron is the author of four books––The Archetypal Cosmos, Discovering ErisThe Rebirth of the Hero, and Archetypal Reflections. A founding editor of Archai: The Journal of Archetypal Cosmology (2008-2015), Keiron now serves as Senior Editorial Advisor. He has also taught for CIIS and GrofTranspersonal Training (UK,) and is commissioning editor for Muswell Hill Press in London.

Jay Dufrechou, J.D., Ph.D., is the author of Moving through Grief, Reconnecting with Nature. He worked for many years as an attorney before undertaking doctoral studies at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP), now Sofia University, where he has taught transpersonal research ethics, the principles and practicalities dissertation research, and supervised numerous doctoral dissertations on transpersonal topics. Jay lives in Helena, Montana, where he works as a mediator and consultant in conflict resolution, and is a professional archetypal astrologer. Jay has training in the Enneagram, psychodrama, dreamwork, Holotropic Breathwork, and a range of other psychospiritual modalities for personal growth, conflict resolution, and community building. Jay is a member of the Board of Directors of the Grof Foundation, which holds the mission of promoting the work of Stanislav Grof, and more broadly to support the expansion of consciousness worldwide through connecting people and catalyzing emergent projects. Jay is a founding member of the Transpersonal Alliance, which provides a forum and community for educational, literary and scientific endeavors in the field of transpersonal psychology.
